First Expert Meeting on Youth and Urban Peace held

Tehran – The First Expert Meeting on Youth and Urban Peace was held on the occasion of International Day of Peace. The event was organized by the Young Shahryaran Club, affiliated with Tehran Municipality and supported by UNIC. It took place at the Cultural and Art Organization of Tehran Municipality on 21 September 2017. The main speakers were: UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko, Head of Elite Commission of the Expediency Council’s Secretariat Dr. Mohammad Ebrahim Maddahi and Head of Environment Commission of Tehran City Council Dr. Zahra Sadreazam-Noori.

Tehran – The First Expert Meeting on Youth and Urban Peace was held on the occasion of International Day of Peace. 

The event was organized by the Young Shahryaran Club, affiliated with Tehran Municipality and supported by UNIC.   It took place at the Cultural and Art Organization of Tehran Municipality on 21 September 2017.

The main speakers were: UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko, Head of Elite Commission of the Expediency Council’s Secretariat Dr. Mohammad Ebrahim Maddahi and Head of Environment Commission of Tehran City Council Dr. Zahra Sadreazam-Noori.

In her opening remarks, UNIC Director Dotsenko quoting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said “In times of insecurity, communities that look different become convenient scapegoats.”

She said that this year, the International Day of Peace focuses on engaging and mobilizing people throughout the world to show support for refugees and migrants. She added it is about bringing people together and reminding them of their common humanity.

“You, young people have a vital role to play,” she said, adding that for example, youth can volunteer to help refugees and migrants in their communities and cities.   She also highlighted various peace initiatives of the Iranian government.

Dr. Mohammad Ebrahim Maddahi reiterated that youth has a lot of opportunities. He said all efforts should be exerted in order to benefit from the full potential of young people.

“These were young people at the ages of 17 or 18 who were the main players for victory of the Islamic Revolution and defense of Iran during the Iraqi-imposed war, and hopefully they will be also more active today,” he said. 

 

Presence of a good number of youth and youth experts at the First Expert Meeting on Youth and Urban Peace.

Dr. Zahra Sadreazam-Noori by referring to the important role of youth as the social wealth of all families and communities, told the participants that 50 per cent of Iran’s population are youth.

“Iran is a young country and we should be proud of this,” she added.

The seminar continued by exchange of views by experts on youth and urban peace.
