UN-Habitat Tehran Office, 26 October 2017- UN Day is known as a time to commemorate the existence of United Nations, and also a great opportunity to raise awareness of the aims and achievements of the UN, gaining community support for its work.

UN-Habitat office in Tehran, as in previous years, spent the day with the children, believing in them as the future leaders and decision-makers of our world. Hence a visit was organized to a volunteer-based relief center in southern Tehran.

“Iranian House of Shahre-Rey” is a branch of the
Imam Ali's Popular Students Relief Society. This Center, located in south of Tehran, serves dominantly children aged 7-15 from Pakistani descent; these children have no identity, given their exceptional status.  The Centre supports children with educational courses and strives towards their basic rights, ensuring that they are not left behind because of lack of identity cards or financial issues leading them to child labor. The Centre has also managed to bring on board the Ministry of Education to dedicate a school for these children, and has been working on skill development within this community.

Habitat’s staff had a chance to meet the children present in the center at the time and have a friendly interaction with both the children and the volunteer teachers, explaining what the United Nations was about and elaborate on its broad aims in simple language.  It was interesting to note that one student challenged the Habitat team on the purpose and end result of the UN, to whom the team spent time to respond.  Some gifts, provided by sister UN agencies such as WFP, UNFPA, and UNICEF, were handed over to the Centre for distribution among the students.

The staff continued their visit to the settlements next to the agricultural fields of district 20 in Tehran, where the children’s families live and work in under-privileged conditions, and had an opportunity to chat with some residents.
