Finding UN Information on Women Issues on International Women’s Day

Tehran - On International Women’s Day United Nations Information Centre in cooperation with International Relations Department of Tarbiat Modares University and Iranian Association of Women’s Studies (IAWS) held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation” with focus on women issues for some 30 participants at the UN building on 8 March 2018. The session started by screening of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres video message on the International Women’s Day.

Tehran - On International Women’s Day United Nations Information Centre in cooperation with International Relations Department of Tarbiat Modares University and Iranian Association of Women’s Studies (IAWS) held a workshop on “Finding UN Information and Documentation” with focus on women issues for some 30 participants at the UN building on 8 March 2018.

The session started by screening of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres video message on the International Women’s Day.

UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami introduced UNIC website and the participants learnt how to find the Persian translation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other related documents. By navigating through the UN website Security Council and its landmark resolution 1325 adopted in 2000 on Women, Peace and Security; Economic and Social Council and Commission of the Status of Women as one of its subsidiary bodies were discussed.

Then Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami addressed the participants on UN Womenwhich is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. 

Participants got familiar with the internship programme at the UN Women, Women in Politics Map and Women and Sustainable Development Goals.

Women issues among other global issues and UN Secretary-General’s Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” webpages were reviewed. 

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres webpage and his senior management team that has now reached gender parity for the first time was also reviewed.  Ms. Ghaemmaghami also spoke about Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed and Chef de Cabinet Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti.

UNIC invited UNFPA Programme Specialist Dr. Monire Bassir to brief the audience on gender issues. She spoke about UNFPA 's work, which aims at ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. She also discussed with the participants the importance of universal access to reproductive health, and talked about UNFPA's work on women's empowerment and ending harmful practices against women. 

Persian copies of the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the UN System Chart were distributed among participants.

At the end of the session one of the participants Dr Javad Salehi professor of international law from Shiraz University expressed his satisfaction with the workshop and said that he will try to arrange a trip for the UNIC Reference Assistant to the Shiraz University to hold the same workshop.
