World Press Freedom Day

The Best of 2016-2018 World Press Photo Exhibition coincides with the World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May 2018.  The theme of the 2018 celebration is: Keeping Power in Check:  Media, Justice and The Rule of Law.

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General said: "On World Press Freedom Day 2018, I call on governments to strengthen press freedom, and to protect journalists. Promoting a free press is standing up for our right to truth."

The World Press Photo Foundation supports the ambition of the United Nations Secretary-General. Laurens Korteweg, Director of Exhibitions at World Press Photo, stated ‘We showcase stories that make people stop, feel, think and act. We encourage photographers in the whole world to present their stories and inform the public with different perspectives.  We exhibit those stories to a worldwide audience and encourage debate on their meaning.’

He added: ‘Every year we receive amazing contributions from Iranian photographers, who are known for their professionalism, good eye, attention to details and high technique. Their experiences are valuable and unique and we hope to incorporate more Iranian photographers into future editions of the contest.’
