Workshop on the International Court of Justice

Iranian Association of UN Studies (IAUNS) in partnership with UNIC Tehran organized a workshop on “Institution of proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ)” for some 20 graduate students of international law at the UN building on 15 May 2018. The workshop was conducted by the Kharazmi University Professor and consultant to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Office, Centre for International Legal Affairs Dr Hadi Azari.

Iranian Association of UN Studies (IAUNS) in partnership with UNIC Tehran organized a workshop on “Institution of proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ)” for some 20 graduate students of international law at the UN building on 15 May 2018.

The workshop was conducted by the Kharazmi University Professor and consultant to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Office, Centre for International Legal Affairs Dr Hadi Azari.

 

IAUNS President Dr. Nasrin Mosaffa opened the session.  A video on ICJ with Persian subtitles, which was translated by UNIC inters, was screened for the group. Then by navigating through the website of ICJ, the UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami-Farahani briefed the students on how to find and retrieve information. There was a focus on the five contentious cases organized by Iran as well as current judges ad hoc including Professor Djamchid Momtaz as the ad hoc judge in the case “Certain Iranian Assets (Islamic Republic of Iran v. United States of America)”.

Then Dr Azari briefed on Institution of proceedings before the ICJ. He introduced the different procedures such as application, compromise and framework agreement as well as their differences and impacts.

Later the participants were divided to two groups and tried to prepare different proceedings according to what they had learned.

Ms. Zohreh Safavi one of the PhD students expressed her satisfaction from the workshop and said it has helped her to have a much better understanding of ICJ and its work.

Persian copies of UN Charter and the UN System Chart were distributed among the participants.
