Students of women's studies navigate the UN online

Tehran – Some 15 students of women’s studies from Allameh Tabataba’i University participated in a “finding UN information on women issues” training session on 2 July 2018. UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami introduced UNIC website and the participants learnt how to find the Persian translation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other related documents.

Tehran – Some 15 students of women’s studies from Allameh Tabataba’i University participated in a “finding UN information on women issues” training session on 2 July 2018.

UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami introduced UNIC website and the participants learnt how to find the Persian translation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other related documents.

While navigating through the UN website and reviewing General Assembly webpage they learnt that an Ecuadorian politician and poet becomes fourth woman to preside over that main UN body. Then the Security Council and its landmark resolution 1325 adopted in 2000 on Women, Peace and Security and Commission of the Status of Women with Iran as a current member were discussed.

Then, Ms. Ghaemmaghami addressed the participants on UN Women which is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. 

Participants got familiar with the internship programme at the UN Women, Women in Politics Map and Women and Sustainable Development Goals. 

Women issues among other global issues and the former UN Secretary-General’s Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” webpages were reviewed.

UNIC invited UNFPA Programme Specialist Dr Monire Bassir to brief the audience on gender issues. She spoke about UNFPA 's work, which aims at ensuring that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. She also discussed with the participants the importance of universal access to reproductive health, and talked about UNFPA's work on women's empowerment and ending harmful practices against women. 

Persian copies of the UN Charter as well as the UN System Chart were distributed among participants.

 

At the end of the session Ms Najmeh Vahedi who made the coordination for participation of the students, expressed her satisfaction with the training session.
