UNIC Director Maria Dotsenko briefed some 25 advisors from different districts in Tehran, on the history of the International Youth Day establishment, that on 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth, adopted by the General Assembly in 1996 (resolution 50/81).

Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security represents an unprecedented acknowledgement of the urgent need to engage young peacebuilders in promoting peace and countering extremism, and clearly positions youth as important partners in the global efforts.

Mr. Sargazi and Ms. Dotsenko

International Youth Day is commemorated every year on 12 August, bringing youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrating the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society.

Dotsenko pointed out that there are currently 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the world which is the largest youth population ever.  She also said that more than half of Iranian population are youth and commended efforts of authorities to engage youth in all aspects of community life.

Referring to the theme of this year’s International Youth Day, Dotsenko said this year’s youth day is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.

UNIC Director spoke about opportunities for Iranian youth, which are offered by UNIC in Iran and for youth globally by the UN and how UN Department of Public Information works for youth and with youth.

She read the message of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and highlighted his worlds: “The hopes of the world rest on young people. Peace, economic dynamism, social justice, tolerance — all this and more, today and tomorrow, depends on tapping into the power of youth.”
